Harry Louis Winkler, 82, of Pinehurst, Idaho, passed away February 13, 2012 at the family home of Pinehurst, Idaho. He was born October 7, 1929 at Hartwell, Missouri; Harry was the son of Harry and Ollie E. (Orfield) Winkler. Harry moved to the Silver Valley in 1945 from Kansas City, Kansas. He married Mary Moore on March 9, 1952 at Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Harry served in the U.S. Army. When Harry first moved to the Silver Valley he had worked at various mines. After his marriage to his wife Mary, Harry and Mary became a logging team and had served as private contractors for Whiteman’s Saw Mill and Veazey Saw Mill. Harry had also worked as a mechanic for Shoshone County. He retired in 1995. Harry was a member of the American Legion, a member of the Kellogg Senior Dance Group and a member of the Pen And Quill Writers Group. Harry had also served on the Pinehurst City Council and was chairman of the Pinehurst Police Commission. Harry was an inventor; he had five patents for inventions within the electronic field. He had also designed and manufactured his own radio system called Winkler’s Little Logger Signaling System. Mary and Harry had also written and published three books. Harry also loved and enjoyed his family, digging for old bottles, huckleberry picking and he would often say that his happiest moments were working in the woods with his wife Mary. Harry had a unique personality and sense of humor; his thoughts and concerns were always for others before himself. Harry is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years Mary Winkler of the family home of Pinehurst, Idaho; two daughters Sandra Walker of Mount Vernon, Washington and Terrie and her husband Dean Clark of Pinehurst, Idaho; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters Madge Lena Higgins of Kansas City, Kansas and Florence Meads of Vancouver, Washington; his half-brother Jimmy Hubbard of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, one son Harry L. Winkler and two brothers Virgil and Bill. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel of Kellogg, Idaho with Rev. Bob Evans officiating. Interment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery of Kellogg, Idaho. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 Government Way, Hayden, Idaho 83835.
