During his school years he delivered newspapers (1938-1941); worked in the dairy (1941-1942); worked in the sawmill (1943-44), and graduated in 1943. Bob moved to the Silver Valley (Idaho) in 1944 working for Day Mines, Bitco (Kaman), E. G. Smith Trucking, and the Osburn Supply Company. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1949, sent to Japan, was released in the spring of 1950 and then recalled that summer for Korea; released in the fall of 1951 and discharged in 1953.

Bob married June Marilyn Smith on August 5, 1951, in the Methodist Church in Wallace, Idaho. They moved to San Francisco, California, while Bob served in the U.S. Army stationed at the Presidio. June and Bob returned to Osburn and worked at the Osburn Supply Company, eventually purchasing the business in 1973; they retired in 1993. They traveled all over the world. Bob participated in a bowling league for many years, as well as the Silver Valley Square Dance club. He was very active in the Osburn Lions club for over 50 years, holding a number of offices.
