Beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John William Steeler of Smelterville, Idaho passed away December 16, 2014 at Pacifica Senior Living Center in Pinehurst. He was born November 30, 1918 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and was the son of William E. Steeler and Pearl Hall.
John grew up in Oklahoma and was an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a lifelong member of the VFW in Osburn. John lived in Northern Idaho for nearly 50 years working as a Grain Elevator operator in Harrison, Idaho where he retired and maintained many lasting friendships.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, he enjoyed bargaining for cars and trucks and other items, he was a very loving, giving and caring person and had a keen sense of humor. He had a strong devotion to his heritage and his country. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
John is survived by his sons Ronald, Jeffery and Roger Steeler and James and Randy LaGoy; and daughters Cindy Seely, Michelle Steeler and Susie Apperson. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Bryan Weeks and the mothers of his children.
A gathering of family and friends for a memorial service will be held at the Lion’s Club in Smelterville, Idaho at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 3rd, 2015.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the VFW in Osburn, Idaho.
