Ray Smith Yount

Ray S. Yount, 88, of Kellogg, ID, passed away on April 4, 2026 at Mountain Valley of Cascadia Health and Rehabilitation in Kellogg, where he had been a resident. Ray was a long time letter carrier and mail clerk in the Silver Valley community.

Ray was born in 1937 at the family home in Wadner, ID. Ray attended Wardner grade school, and then Kellogg Junior High and High School, graduating in 1955. Later in life, he graduated from LCSC with a degree in management technology and a master’s degree in VocEd from the University of Idaho.

After graduation from high school, Ray went on to work for the United States Postal Service in Kellogg on a part-time basis until he volunteered for the draft in 1958. After a tour of duty of two years, he returned to the Kellogg post office and worked there another 33 years. He retired from the post office in 1990, with a total combined 37 years of service. Concurrently with his postal service employment, he served as a member of the Army Reserves, retiring in 1989 with the rank of Master Sergeant.

After his retirement, Ray worked part-time for ShopKo, Montgomery Ward, and from 1996 to 1999 for the Silver Valley Natural Resources Trustees. During his employment with the SVNRT, he observed and recorded daily ongoing processes at Canyon Creek as well as the Interstate Mill.

Ray leaves behind two sons, Raymond K. Yount, and Brian K. Yount; five grandchildren, Aaron, Anthony, Annika, Michael, and Brian, Jr.

At his request, cremation will take place and inurnment will occur at Greenwood Cemetery, Kellogg.
