Richard “Dick” Charles Whalen, 85

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Richard “Dick” Charles Whalen, 85, of Osburn, Idaho, passed away January 5, 2018 at the Mountain Valley of Cascadia of Kellogg.  He was born May 16, 1932 in Kingston, Idaho; Dick was the son of John and Susan (Heim) Whalen.

Dick has lived in the Silver Valley for most of his life.  He attended and graduated from the Coeur d’ Alene High School of Coeur d’ Alene in 1950.  Dick proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.

Dick first married Eileen Clouting on December 19, 1953 in England; Eileen passed away in 1972.  He then married Janet (Milne) Monigold on February 14, 1976 in Spokane, Washington.

Dick had worked for the GTE Telephone Company of Wallace for thirty-three years, before his retirement in 1993.

Dick was a member of the Osburn Lions Club, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Posse, the Good Sam R.V. Club, the Silver Valley Squares and the Square Wheelers; he was also a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Dick loved and enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, square dancing and traveling.

Dick is survived by his wife Janet Whalen of Kellogg; six children Pat Whalen of Cataldo, Idaho, Dorothy Sebastian of Jefferson, Oregon, Curt and Angie Whalen of North Pole, Alaska, Bret and Kim Monigold of Spokane Valley, Washington, Chet Monigold of Tucson, Arizona and Colette and David Anthony of Osburn, Idaho; nineteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Eileen, five brothers and sisters, a daughter-in-law Cindy Monigold, step grandson Daniel Anthony and two great-granddaughters.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Rita’s Catholic Church of Kellogg with Father Jerome Montez serving as celebrant.  A reception/luncheon will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following the Mass.  Interment will be held at the Shoshone Memorial Gardens of Pinehurst.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Inland Northwest Honor Flight, 608 W. 2nd, Ste. 309, Spokane, Washington 99201-4430.
